Our Process

The most important thing here at Once Upon a Time Reading Tutoring is your child! Their strengths, their weaknesses, and more specifically, where they fall on the reading continuum. We want to meet them where they are currently functioning and move them, skill by skill, along the road to reading. To do this effectively, we use the following process:

How Does it Work?

Step 1.  Conduct an initial meeting with you (parents) to discuss your concerns.  This can be done via email or over the phone.

Step 2.  Meet with your child and complete a diagnostic screening where he or she  will be assessed in the following areas: (This diagnostic is to assess where they fall on the reading continuum.  This test does not diagnose dyslexia)

  • Phonological awareness/Phonemic awareness
  • Phonics (Decoding and Encoding)
  • Fluency
  • Accuracy
  • High Frequency Words
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Listening Comprehension

Step 3. Conduct a 15-minute follow up meeting to discuss your child’s strengths, weaknesses, and next steps.

***Steps 1-3 will be done in one session lasting 45-90 minutes.

Step 4. Create a plan for instruction.

Step 5. Begin tutoring!

  • Once a week or twice a week, depending on child’s individual needs

Step 7. Provide feedback after each session to update parents on their child’s progress.

Watch your child’s confidence and abilities grow as they work to become a skilled reader, writer, and speller!

We look forward to meeting your child!
